Nintendo officially unveiled the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 console on Wednesday,  offering a detailed look at its upgraded features. Building on the success of its predecessor, the Switch 2 boasts enhancements in every aspect, as teased in the January first-look trailer.

Nintendo Switch 2: Features and Specifications

The console gets a 7.9-inch 1080p LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate. When docked, it supports 4K resolution, elevating the gaming experience. Additionally, the redesigned magnetic Joy-Cons serve a dual purpose, functioning as both traditional controllers and a mouse—an innovation previously rumoured.

It also gets a redesigned Joy-Cons, powerful new hardware, and new game communication capabilities.

The 7.9-inch display on the Switch 2 allows for HDR and 120 frames per second gameplay. When docked, the console’s resolution can reach up to 4K. The console comes with a thickness of 13.9 mm, which makes it as thick as its predecessor.

The Switch 2 will have 256GB of built-in storage that can be expanded via microSD Express cards. The system will be backwards compatible with both digital and physical Nintendo Switch titles, as was previously revealed.

As previously suggested and rumoured, Joy-Con 2 controllers are magnetically attached to the system. Additionally, the redesigned Joy-Cons may be slid on surfaces for input and support mouse controls.

According to the press release, the Switch 2 will have “significantly improved CPU and GPU performance over Nintendo Switch,” however, Nintendo has not yet disclosed any details. As per the press release, the console’s improved internals would result in higher processing speed and allow for new, visually complex gaming. Faster loading speeds and more intricate visuals will be supported by the Switch 2. Both handheld and tabletop modes of 3D audio will be supported by the hybrid console.

Additionally, the Switch 2 has a number of social features that are accessible through a new “C” button on the right Joy-Con. GameChat is a new online communication tool that will let gamers interact with other players while they are playing, similar to native chat options on PlayStation and Xbox consoles and Discord.

The GameChat menu will appear when you press the “C” button, enabling up to four people to share their gameplay screens. A Nintendo Switch 2 camera that connects to the device via a USB Type-C connector to facilitate video communication will also be available for purchase via Nintendo.

The Switch 2 has two USB Type-C ports, one at the bottom and one at the top of the console, as well as a new adjustable stand on the back. The game card slot on the Nintendo Switch 2 is identical to the one on the original. When the Nintendo Switch 2 was released on June 5, Nintendo also revealed a ton of new and classic first- and third-party games.

Nintendo Switch 2: Price and Availability

Nintendo Switch 2 with 256GB storage costs $449.99 (Rs 38,500 approx) in the US. The console will come with a brand-new Mario Kart game named Mario Kart World. The suggested retail price for the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle in the US is $499.99.

Nintendo Switch 2 will be available starting June 5, 2025. As with the original Nintendo Switch, it is important to note that the Switch 2 will not formally debut in the Indian market. But that is unlikely to stop people from buying the handheld console through the grey market.
