5 things to know before the market opens Tuesday

Happy Tuesday. It’s the first day with Canada’s reciprocal tariffs in effect. President Donald Trump is now saying Canadian planemaker Bombardier can’t sell in the U.S. unless it moves production to America.

Stock futures are lower this morning after a mixed week for Wall Street.

Here are five key things investors need to know to start the trading day:

1. Late start

2. Hit the road

Gas prices set a new Labor Day record in the U.S. yesterday. The national average was $4.15 per gallon, marking the first time it topped $4 on the holiday, according to AAA.

As CNBC’s Sarah Agostino reports, that easily surpasses the prior Labor Day peak set in 2012. Because Labor Day is a popular time for road trips, U.S. travelers may be shelling out more than usual.

Still, value-minded vacationers haven’t appeared to be pulling back in an era of higher prices. On the other end of the spectrum, the “fallcation” period is just getting started for the wealthy.

3. Jet crash

An Amazon cargo jet on Sunday overran the runway at Miami International Airport. At least five people are dead and another five were injured.

The plane went about 1,300 feet past the runway, crashing into vehicles both inside and outside the airport. Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, said the scene is one of “utter devastation,” with “debris everywhere.”

Homendy said investigators will be on site for at least one week and hope to release more details today. The investigators recovered the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, she said.

4. Feeling fAtIgue

Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta and Google all rolled out model updates tied to artificial intelligence last week.

As CNBC’s Jonathan Vanian reports, tech companies are ramping up their pace of innovation to stay at the forefront of AI. But as Runpod CEO Zhen Lu put it, there’s also the concern of “model fatigue.”

Meanwhile, the AI boom continues to drive up prices for rural land that developers are eyeing for data centers. As CNBC’s Tobias Burns writes, that’s resulting in backlash from some local residents.

5. ISO: CISOs

AI is upping the ante for security leaders. As CNBC’s Samantha Subin reports, it’s put the chief information security officer role into the spotlight.

In the age of AI, they need more than just cybersecurity expertise and experience with government or compliance matters. CISOs manage security for internal AI agents and help keep critical data from leaking.

For the right candidates, the CISO job market is hot as companies look to stay ahead of the mounting cybersecurity threats. Security chiefs are now in more boardroom meetings and conversations with CEOs as the landscape shifts.
