OpenAI is worried about the growth of DeepSeek AI but the US government feels it is nothing but a copycat AI model trained from its own models.

The US Govt feels that DeepSeek could another copycat AI model
DeepSeek has raised eyebrows and shocked the IT sector in the US since its launch for consumers earlier this year and the US government is equally worried about its impact and alleged data sharing policies with China.
Now, the US government has reportedly claimed that the DeepSeek AI model has been built on OpenAI technology, and it has substantial evidence to prove its point. David Sacks, AI chief for the White House has been quoted making this claim in an interview by Fox News this week.
Sacks even pointed out that DeepSeek is likely to have used a technique called distillation where the OpenAI model would have been used to train the DeepSeek R1 model which is now freely available to users.
The New US-China Battle
Without actually sharing the evidence for his alleged claims, the AI chief said OpenAI is not going to be happy about these developments. Report from Bloomberg says OpenAI is internally looking into the AI model to see if DeepSeek has distilled its own AI model.
The US has always seen China with envy and the AI battle is not going to be very different, especially with DeepSeek making its presence felt among the US users with its free app. Sacks realises the impact of DeepSeek and even though he questions its credibility, he is quick to laud the Chinese startup for its efforts and the ability to develop AI models without needing heavy and expensive computing power.
Taking a dig at DeepSeek AI, Sacks said the growth and demand for the Chinese startup will encourage and motivate US companies to advance their growth in this space and ensure that more copycat AI models don’t turn up in the near future.
DeepSeek R1 has risen to the top of the App Store rankings among iPhone users in the US in a few weeks, and all this interest has surely got the big people worried, especially now that an AI model has been open sourced for everyone to decipher and work on.
