Instagram has been testing the dislike option for a long time but now it has officially talked about the tool and people are clearly not liking it.

Dislike button has been talked about for years and we might finally see it
Instagram has officially confirmed that it is testing a new feature allowing users to dislike comments on posts and reel videos. After months of speculation, Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, recently revealed in a Threads post that this feature aims to enhance the overall experience of conversations on the platform.
“Some of you may have noticed that we’re testing a new button next to Instagram comments that allows individuals to privately express their dissatisfaction with that particular comment. I’d like to be clear: this is a test; there is no dislike count, and no one will know if you tap the button. Eventually, we may use this signal in comment ranking to move negative comments down. We think that this will help make comments more welcoming on Instagram,” Mosseri said.
The new dislike button, available on both feed posts and reels, won’t show a dislike count or notify others when you downvote a comment. However, the number of dislikes will influence the comment’s ranking. Previously, users could only like their favourite comments.
According to TechCrunch, Meta stated that this test is intended to help improve the quality of the comments section.
“We’re working on strategies to help people better control their Instagram experience and what they’re seeing on the app,” according to a spokeswoman for the organisation.
“We’re testing a new button next to each comment on a Reel or Feed that allows individuals to discreetly communicate that they don’t like or think that comment relevant. To begin, we will test this with a small group of people. Later, we may test shifting these comments lower down in the comments box to improve the user experience,” they added, as quoted by TechCrunch.
Instagram’s new dislike button feature is similar to YouTube’s comment downvote, which stopped displaying dislike counts in 2021. Reddit also employs a similar downvote mechanism to highlight the most relevant discussions.
However, Instagram’s dislike feature is currently in a testing phase and Meta has not yet announced the official rollout date for all the users.
