The iOS 18 version is running on millions of iPhone and iPads in the market, something that Apple is proud of compared to the Android share.
Majority of iPhones have been updated to iOS 18 but Apple still has some running on the older version
The first official adoption statistics for iOS 18 since its September 2024 introduction have been made public by technology company Apple. The adoption of iOS 18 is closely following the distribution of iOS 17 in 2023, according to the data. The iPhones that used the App Store as of January 21 are the basis for these figures.
Currently, 76 percent of iPhones released in the last four years have iOS 18 installed, but 63 percent of iPads from the same period are running iPadOS 18. In addition, 53 percent of all iPads are running iPadOS 18, while 68 percent of all iPhones have updated to iOS 18.
A significant share of operating systems are still older versions. Furthermore, 13 percent of iPhones are still running older versions of iOS 17, while 19 percent are on iOS 17. In the same vein, 19 percent of iPads are running previous versions of iPadOS, while 28 percent are using iPadOS 17.
According to data from the previous year, by early February, 66 percent of all iPhones were running iOS 17 and 76 percent of iPhones from the preceding four years had the update installed. iPadOS 17 was installed on 61 percent of iPads made in the previous four years and 53 percent of all iPads got the update.
These figures were released by Apple a little earlier this year. Adoption may be further accelerated by upcoming releases like iOS 18.3 and iPadOS 18.3 that have released this week. iOS 18.3 brings new Apple Intelligence features like visual intelligence. This function will allow users to identify flora and animals by pointing their phone’s camera at them and it may even assist in identifying potential allergens.
The new Siri features for the AI-compatible devices will be introduced with the iOS 18.4 release in April, which could lead to yet another round of upgrades.
Advanced functions associated with Apple Intelligence are only available on newer models, such as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 models, even though iOS 18 is compatible with iPhones as old as the iPhone XS/XR. Some users with older devices could be discouraged from updating due to this hardware limitation.
