Roughly 15% of TotalEnergies’ production is offline, as the war with Iran nears the one-month mark, but surging oil prices have more than made up for the lost barrels, chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné told CNBC in an exclusive interview.
With Brent crude trading solidly above $100 a barrel, much of the attention has focused on oil prices, but Pouyanné said the crisis is having a much larger impact on product prices.
“The Brent market is ok, but the products market, which is the one which impacts customers … is much higher than Brent,” he told CNBC at S&P Global’s CERAWeek energy conference in Houston. He added, the world has “never experienced” refining margins from products including Asian jet fuel at current levels. In addition to petroleum products, about 30% of global fertilizer moves through the Strait of Hormuz, jeopardizing the spring planting season.
TotalEnergies is a major player in the global LNG market, including the largest exporter of U.S. LNG. The CEO said the company can still fulfill customer orders in Europe and Asia thanks to its diversified global portfolio.
Last week, QatarEnergy said its Ras Laffan plant suffered “extensive damage” following Iranian drone attacks, effectively taking 20% of global LNG supply offline. The shutdown has sent natural gas prices in Europe and Asia surging.
Pouyanné expects prices could move substantially higher if the war drags on through the summer, since Asian demand rises over the summer just as Europe looks to refill storage. European natural gas traded around $18 per million British thermal units Tuesday, but Pouyanné said prices could hit $40/MMBtu over the summer if the conflict continues.
TotalEnergies is a major investor in U.S. energy. On Monday, it struck a deal with the Trump administration to abandon its offshore wind projects in return for $1 billion. The company agreed to reinvest the money into U.S. oil and gas projects instead.
The federal government is key for offshore wind permitting, and the current administration has been a vocal critic of the industry. Pouyanné said he did not want to litigate with the administration over its offshore wind leases – acquired under former President Joe Biden – and so approached the administration with a deal. He added that in the U.S. offshore wind no longer makes sense given cheaper alternatives.
“In the specific situation of the U.S., where you have a lot of land, you have a lot of gas, you have a lot of coal, you have a lot of land to build onshore solar, onshore wind, batteries, we don’t need to have offshore wind,” he said. “It’s a marginal technology, which is not affordable.”
“I prefer to allocate my capital to technologies which are more efficient, which give affordable electricity to customers,” he said.
As part of its expanding U.S. portfolio, TotalEnergies recently inked a 15-year agreement with Google to supply renewable power for data centers. Pouyanné said other hyperscalers – including Amazon and Microsoft – are now speaking to TotalEnergies directly.
“These hyperscalers have understood that an energy company – like TotalEnergies – because we have also capacity, not only to build, to invest, to have land, to trade, we were quite a good partner for them,” he said.
African and Caribbean nations want countries which benefited from slavery to pay compensation but it will not be straightforward.

Ulta Beauty reported its fourth-quarter earnings Thursday.

Ulta Beauty reported earnings per share Thursday that missed expectations but revenue that topped what Wall Street was expecting.
Shares of the company sank roughly 8% in extended trading.
Here’s how the company performed for the fiscal fourth quarter ended Jan. 31 compared with what Wall Street expected, according to estimates from LSEG:
The company’s net sales grew 11.8% in the fourth quarter compared with the year-ago period. For the full fiscal 2025 year, Ulta reported a 9.7% increase in net sales to $12.4 billion.
The company said its gross profit as a percentage of net sales decreased slightly due in part to a deleveraging of fixed expenses and revenue, though that was offset by lower inventory shrink and supply chain efficiencies.
For fiscal 2026, Ulta said it expects net sales growth of 6% to 7% and diluted earnings per share of between $28.05 and $28.55. The midpoint of that EPS guidance, at $28.30, was slightly less than the $28.40 at the midpoint what analysts had expected for 2026.
It also projected 2026 same store sales of 2.5% to 3.5% compared with an estimate of up to 3.5%, according to Street Account.
Analysts had high expectations for the company’s earnings report. Oppenheimer analysts wrote in a Wednesday note that they expected Ulta’s Q4 results to be “solid.”
“Our better-than-planned financial performance reflects our continued focus on serving our guests and consistently delivering great experiences through better execution, compelling newness, more seamless and convenient experiences, and bold new merchandising and marketing strategies,” CEO Kecia Steelman said in a statement.
It’s the company’s first earnings report since Christopher DelOrefice became Ulta’s chief financial officer in early December.

Fair counter, but this bet is about being better than four teams in an extremely weak division. It’s not about surviving the entire National League side of the bracket at a coin-flip price. More on that in a little bit.
The Tigers have an insane 1-2-3 in the rotation with Tarik Skubal, Framber Valdez and Jack Flaherty. Then there’s 43-year-old Justin Verlander, who will win games, too. I really like the pitching depth and the bullpen, and if the lineup reaches its potential, we’re talking about a 90-win team here.
There’s a lot of Royals love around baseball circles and I get it. Kansas City will fight valiantly, but it’ll be Detroit’s division to lose down the stretch.

Let’s get frisky.
The Fish don’t possess heaps of depth, and they reside in the same division as the Mets and Phillies, but they’ve improved immensely over the last few years. Manager Clayton McCullough took a 62-win team in 2024 to 79 wins last season and I don’t think it was an aberration at all.
Miami starts the 2026 campaign with six winnable games against the Rockies and White Sox, and the schedule doesn’t get too difficult until late April when it heads west to San Francisco and Los Angeles. By that time, All-Star outfielder Kyle Stowers will be back from injury. Assuming this team doesn’t get buried early, it will find ways to stay afloat.
Also, look out if 22-year-old righty Eury Perez puts it all together.

I promise this is not an overreaction to the Metropolitans pinging around Pirates ace Paul Skenes on Opening Day.
That was impressive, though.
Look, you’re either a Dodgers backer or you’re looking for a team down the board at a nice price to present a fighting chance in the postseason. The Mets’ front office is serious about winning, as evidenced by the offseason acquisitions of Bo Bichette, Freddy Peralta and Marcus Semien to name a few.
And I like 7/1 a whole lot more than +115 on Los Angeles.
Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto and Bichette anchor a deep lineup, and I would bet GM David Stearns deals for pitching help at the trade deadline. If anyone can beat the Dodgers, I think it’s the Mets.

US television presenter Savannah Guthrie believes her mother was kidnapped and that two ransom notes demanding money were real, but more information is required to find her kidnapper.
‘We cannot be at peace without knowing’, she said in an interview that aired Thursday on NBC News’ “Today” show, her first since 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie’s apparent abduction.
More than 50 days have passed since Guthrie was first reported missing on 1 February. Authorities believe the 84-year-old was kidnapped, abducted or otherwise taken against her will. The FBI released surveillance videos of a masked man who was outside Guthrie’s front door on the night she vanished.
The Guthrie family has offered a $1 million reward for information leading to the recovery of their mother.
The former ER star is back playing a physician with PTSD in a new US medical drama.

On the most critical play of Nebraska’s Sweet 16 loss to rival Iowa, the Cornhuskers had only four players on the floor, and coach Fred Hoiberg took the blame.
’Put that one on me,” he said. “It was a miscommunication and I’m the head coach.”
After Nebraska cut Iowa’s lead to three with 58.8 seconds left of the teams’ NCAA Tournament Midwest Region semifinal, the Hawkeyes’ Alvaro Folgueiras was supposed to hang around the midcourt line. As Kael Combs was looking to inbound the ball, Folgueiras started jumping and raced toward the basket.
Nebraska’s Rienk Mast wasn’t on the floor with the rest of his teammates, and as he tried to sprint from the bench down the sideline to the opposite end of the court, Combs fired a 70-foot pass to Folgueiras — who should have been covered by Mast.
Folgueiras caught the pass, took one dribble and slammed it home. He was fouled on the play and popped up screaming with joy, then converted the free throw for a six-point lead. Iowa went on to win 77-71, securing its first Elite Eight appearance since 1987.
“I saw some movement on the bench,” Folgueiras said. “I just told Kael to get me the ball because I saw that there were only four on the floor. They were trying to figure out who they were guarding.”
Iowa coach Ben McCollum made clear the play didn’t result from any brilliant strategy on his part. He was as surprised as anyone.
“I was like, I don’t know why he isn’t being guarded,” McCollum said. “I didn’t know (they only had four players on the floor), and then he dunked it, and then I’m like, ‘What the heck just happened?’”
McCollum said one of his assistants told him Nebraska didn’t have five players on the floor.
Folgueiras, a native of Malaga, Spain, described what happened in soccer terms.
“It was great to have that striker look where you get the ball against nobody,” he said.
The 20-year-old transfer from Robert Morris finished with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting. His 3-pointer with 5:03 tied the game at 65-all, four days after his corner 3 in the closing seconds gave the Hawkeyes a second-round win over top-seeded and defending national champion Florida.
This time, he capitalized on a critical error.
“I was pretty shocked to see Alvaro wide open,” Iowa’s Bennett Stirtz said. “I didn’t even know they had four players on until we were in the locker room. Kael threw a great pass.”
