LSU basketball has a new radio commentator in Jordy Hultberg | LSU

There is a new voice for fans to hear during LSU basketball games.

Jordy Hultberg, a former Tigers guard and assistant coach, is the new LSU basketball color commentator on the LSU Sports Radio Network, replacing former LSU coach John Brady.

“I was asked if I’d be interested in it, and I said ‘absolutely,” Hultberg told The Advocate. “There’s nothing like the live event that adds to the excitement and the adrenaline, and I love doing it. I love college basketball. I love all the sports, but since I played it, that’s my first love.”

Hultberg, 69, started his broadcasting career as an announcer on LSU’s pay-per-view TigerVision network in 1983. He then became an analyst for SEC and LSU basketball games on the LSU Sports Radio Network, and for about 12 years was an on-air host of multiple shows for the then-New Orleans Hornets.

He made his season debut during the Tigers’ 85-81 exhibition win over Central Florida Wednesday at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. He said calling the game felt like “riding a bike,” and that his play-by-play analyst Chris Blair was terrific.

Hultberg also said that he’s excited to have a “front row seat” to watch coach Will Wade bring the program back to prominence.

“To the days that I remember when we were playing for SEC championships,” Hultberg said. “When we were making deep runs in the NCAA tournament. That’s where LSU basketball deserves to be. That’s where it needs to be. They’ve got loyal fans that have been there through thick and thin for decades, and they deserve this program to be among the best of the best.”

Hultberg played for coach Dale Brown from 1976‑80, averaging 9.4 points, 2.4 assists and shooting 45% from the field for his career. As a senior, he helped LSU finish 26‑6 overall and 14‑4 in the Southeastern Conference, finishing second in the league standings. The Tigers won the SEC Tournament championship that season and advanced to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament.

Hultberg, a product of De La Salle High School in New Orleans, served as an assistant coach under Brown from 1980-83 and currently hosts a local radio show on KLWB-FM 103.7, an ESPN Radio affiliate, in Lafayette.

LSU’s previous radio color commentator held the role for the last nine years. Brady left the position to make a return to coaching, becoming LSU New Orleans basketball’s senior adviser for athletic advancement and men’s basketball strategy.

LSU’s season opener is coincidentally against LSU New Orleans at 7 p.m. Nov. 3 at the PMAC. Before that, Wade will lead the Tigers in their final exhibition game against Florida State at noon Oct. 24 at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee, Florida.
