LSU defensive end Princewill Umanmielen will not return to the Tigers’ game against Mississippi State after he was injured in the first quarter while tackling a ballcarrier near the line of scrimmage.
Trainers attended to Umanmielen on the field after he made the stop. They then took away his helmet and walked with him slowly toward the sideline and into the injury tent. The senior emerged after a couple minutes and rejoined his teammates near the bench.
LSU’s radio broadcast said that Umanmielen hit his head on the tackle.
Umanmielen, an Ole Miss transfer, is LSU’s top defensive player. He entered Week 7 ranked second among FBS defenders in sacks (eight), squarely on pace to break the Tigers’ single-season sack record, which Arden Key set when he dropped opposing quarterbacks 12 times in 2016.
Umanmielen had two tackles, including one for a loss, before he was hurt on Saturday.
LSU put redshirt junior Dylan Carpenter in Umanmielen’s spot on the edge after he left the game.
The Tigers were already down two starters on defense entering Saturday’s game: linebacker Whit Weeks (leg) and defensive back Dashawn Spears (ACL). Their offense was also missing tight end Trey’Dez Green (knee).
Spears is out for the season, but coach Lane Kiffin has said that he hopes Weeks and Green can return to the field at some point this year.
LSU wide receiver Tre Brown was also injured against Mississippi State. He walked off the field on crutches in the first half but returned to the game at the start of the second half.
