Saints lose to Steelers in Paris, drop to 2-5

PARIS, France – When 42-year-old Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers converted a 3rd-and-six with an eight-yard run to push the game to the two-minute warning, reality began to set in. The Saints just didn’t bring their game with them across the pond, and lost to Pittsburgh 16-10.

The first down collected by Rodgers and the plays that followed would have set up a field goal by Steelers kicker Chris Boswell to make it a two-possession game at 19-10 for Pittsburgh, but the Saints were offside on the attempt, and the penalty gave the Steelers a first down and allowed Rodgers to kneel out the remainder of the clock.

Rodgers collected more rushing yards on that late first-down run than Alvin Kamara had in the entire game, with five. As a whole, the Saints’ run game was just a non-factor throughout the game. Saints QB Tyler Shough led the team in rushing yards with seven. As a team, the Saints totaled just 18 rushing yards, averaging just 1.1 yards per attempt.

On defense, the Saints just couldn’t stop the Steelers on third down. Pittsburgh converted 10 of 16 of their third-down chances, including the late Rodgers run that would essentially ice the game.

Once again, the Saints offense was shut out entirely in the first quarter. Seven games into the season, New Orleans has only scored in the first quarter in one game all season, and has been shut out in the rest.

New Orleans now limps into their bye week at 2-5. When the Saints return to action on Nov. 8, they’ll play the Cleveland Browns at the Superdome.
